Met Ashley & Regina, Zheng Lan, Hui Ling, Limin and Yuen Teng coincidentally over the last two days
On Thursday, when I arrived at the Science Canteen to have lunch with a few FST mates, I saw Ashley and Regina
I was waiting for my CSS (Chemical Sciences Society) interview slot which was at 2.30pm and I had nothing to do (I reached outside the CSS room at 2pm). So I headed to the Science Library. Just as I exited the lift at to get to the Library which was at Level 4, I met Zheng Lan!
(initially saved as draft cos I wanted to blog further. but I didn't. so its now -23sep07 - published)
All these can be found on page H17 of the Home section of The Straits Times on Friday, 24 August 2007. (Click on the image for a bigger version)
I was there last Saturday (18 August 2007) when this took place and I roughly counted the time he took. It was definitely MORE THAN 5 SECONDS, in fact, it was MORE THAN 30 seconds for sure. I counted more than 40 seconds but taking into consideration that I'm not a clock and might have counted slightly faster, it was 100% more than 30seconds!
a FST classmate is actually my 1/2 junior when I was in 2/2 back in NY!
Wow such a coincidence! It was kind of triple coincidence actually. After FST tutorial today, Weiling and Meihui (both of whom I sat with during the lesson) and I took the lift down with Amelia and Wei Bin. At the lift lobby Amelia asked what we were going to do next. Weiling and Meihui were going home and I had nothing to do. So since the remaining three of us hadn't had lunch, we proceeded to the canteen.
There we met Vanessa (my NY band junior) and I was surprised that Amelia knew her too. Then she explained that she got to know Vanessa at NY. And after finding out that I was also from NY, she (as the class monitor) vaguely remembered that there was a Fenella in her senior class (because of the angel and mortal game) and voila~!, we actually "knew" each other since then.
Haha I shall explain why I call it triple coincidence - one, going for lunch together which led to two, meeting Vanessa which led to three, (finding out) we were in senior-junior class!
After lunch there was actually another coincidence! We met Sandy (whom I had yet to meet in school since lessons started last Monday) who was in 2/2 too. During lunch Amelia was asking me which 2/2 classmates I still keep in contact with and I had mentioned Sandy. I was quite surprised there could be so many coincidences in just a couple of hours.
Oh before the tutorial I went to clean up my locker. The lock was so rusty! Fortunately autosol worked and most of the rust was wiped off. haha I left the tube and the cloth I used there for others to use =)
I forgot that I wanted to blog about this, luckily pam was asking me just now "How's school?" so now I remember it.
Okay to elaborate. The place (whole campus) and the people (lecturers, undergraduates and support staff) seem/feel nicer, the support sections (Library and Career, Computer and Counselling Centres) are much more active and welcoming. So far I've attended briefings/workshops by all 4 of the named supports and they have all been very beneficial.
I also think the system of only starting tutorials in week 3 is better because we have more time to do other stuff (attend the briefings and workshops I've mentioned) and settle in (including exploring the place and checking out potential CCAs to join). Without the tutorials to prepare for, weekends are more free for social activities too :)
I went for an interview to join the Management Committee of the NUS Entrepreneurship Society (NES). I want to be in the Events department of Start-up@Singapore (S@S), a sub-division of NES.
It was a group interview by a panel of interviewers including 3 of the current committee members and 2 NES advisors. I was shaking so bad at some point, my legs were bouncing. At the start, after introduction, they gave us a situation on paper and 12minutes to prepare a 5-minute presentation. After that, Vira told us the purpose of it was to see how we react under high pressure conditions with very little time which is what will be the case when we are in the committee.
Then we were asked why we wanted to join S@S and were given 1minute each and it was exactly timed. Finally we were asked to state a strength, given 30s each, and then to state a weakness, also 30s each.
Oh ya, today a new friend I made thru FST gave me a box of chocoballs that she thinks is very cute to thank me for helping her (with CM1101 lecture notes, bidding for 6th module and registering for CM1101 tutorials). I thought it was quite weird to give a friend things because of that but I was told (by tk & pam) that that's just a nice gesture. haha maybe its actually quite common and I'm just not used to it.
"your voice over the phone sounded like 10 years ago!"
Wow, that's what Ting Weilin told me in between singing, and he said Weiliang agreed. (I forgot to mention this in my post earlier.) Weilin said he felt like he was talking to me like 10years back asking me about homework. Haha. He had previously called me when I was still at Raffles Place to check if I was still going to join them.
Hmm. Can someone at 20 sound just like she did when she was 10? *wonders*
Although it isn't my first time to a karaoke outlet, last night's outing with a few Cedar Primary friends was my first time singing with peers at such a place. (previously we had ever been to KBox but I only listened, heez)
I was at Raffles Place with my parents waiting from 6.30pm - the time they said prize-giving would start) - till past 8pm for them to announce the winner of The Straits Times "A Part of My Life" contest. The grand prize was a Volkswagen New Jetta. So I only reached Paradiz Centre just before 9pm. After calling Ting Weilin, Weiliang (who answered my call) came down to lead me to Dynasty. They said its quite an unsafe place but as a group its still alright. Furthermore the room charge is only $10 per hour which is much lower than KBox. However, each person has to order a drink which costs $5 and is only a small cup!
I was quite surprised when I entered the room as there were only three of them (including Jeremy). I had been told a couple more names when they were making arrangements. It turned out to be a good thing since I got to sing and everyone interacted with one another. Soon after, Julia joined us. We sang till about 11.30pm and I actually felt it was quite short - wanted to stay on longer as I quite enjoyed it. haha. Furthermore, they had lots of songs including many popular English ones.
Leonard and his girlfriend only joined us as we left Dynasty and we headed to the nearby famous tau hway place for tau hway (I had grass jelly though since I just had tau hway for breakfast). Initially I was wondering if I would miss the last train back but Weiliang said I wouldn't so after he agreed to give me $20 for a cab home if I did miss, I stayed on in ease. Haha rich him. An officer who's paid a thousand each month. He treated us to the dessert.
Soon, we bid the couple farewell and the others walked me to Dhoby Ghaut station. Wow, I actually managed to catch the last train (terminating at Kranji) back at about 0015am.
Today Jeremy today me that he and Julia missed their last bus as they were looking at something at the bus-stop~! haha. They walked home and Jeremy only reached home (at Boon Keng) at past 2am after sending Julia home (at Potong Pasir). Lol, if I were to walk home I would probably reach at dawn or later.
My heart feels empty, even though my life is mostly full
Its lonely to attend university without your friends taking the same modules as you. I am feeling this very strongly because despite having a chat with a couple of seniors for over 3hours this afternoon, my heart still felt devoid of companionship on my way home this evening after my short 1-hour LAB1201 Bahasa Indonesia (BI) introduction lecture. I have been attending lectures alone so far ever since school started on 13 Aug. It should not be a problem for me since I do not really chat during lectures but it just felt like something was missing - I seemed to need a friend just to sit beside me.
I had felt alright on the first day. I went to school an hour before lecture at 12 to get my tertiary ez-link card at Students' Services Centre at Yusof Ishak House, then I went to the Science Students' Hub to get the free organisers from the Science Club and NUSSU. Next I went to the Sci Lib to check for reply regarding my appeal to take 6 modules, but there wasn't any. Before I rushed for the lecture, I had to meet a Zhiwei to buy CM1101 text University Chemistry and his lecture was to end at 12.
My 12pm Chem lecture ended early at 1.30 so after buying a bao, I remembered I was to check for reply to my appeal again so I rushed to the Sci Lib and yay, my appeal was approved. I quickly added the LAB1201 module and placed a bid using all 400 of my General account points before rushing over to my 2pm FST1101 lecture which I was again slightly late for. This ended early to so I was back at the Sci Lib to check the bidding statistics and contacting the Zhiwei to return him his text because he messaged to say he actually didn't have his lab reports which was part of our deal. I also messaged Wang Peng whom I had previously contacted and had all the other materials to buy from her. She was a great person and gave me a CD containing all the soft copies and even said I could message her if I had any questions. I had to wait till 6pm to meet the Zhiwei but I didn't feel lonely at all.
Back to today. There was the EURIP (EURope Immersion Programme) Symposium from 10 to 2 but I had to register for CM1101 lab and tut at 9am. The website was so slow! A few clicks that should have taken at most 5minutes took more than 20minutes! Fortunately I managed to get both of my first choice slots. Then I had to go for CM1101 lecture at 12 and the first half of the Symposium ended early so I only managed to catch about half hour of that and a few minutes of the end after my lecture. Thereafter, I was looking at the posters exhibit and Weicong, the Chemical Sciences Society President (term ending soon), appeared beside me. After a short chat, Desmond, Weicong's senior who just graduated and who was the official photographer of the most recent EURIP (II) appeared to take photos of the posters.
Soon they suggested to have lunch so I joined them and we ended up staying at the Megabites Cafe (new at Sci Fac) for hours and I only left at 530pm for the BI lecture which was at 6pm at Arts Fac.
I learnt quite abit about them and about chemistry lab work. Oh at one point in time Weicong mentioned this question that he usually posed at interviews: If you have to choose between a academic event eg test and a CCA event both of which are at the same time, which would you choose? He said some of the interviewees were so ridiculous they chose the CCA event he crossed out their names immediately. (I had answered that for me, I would definitely choose the test - yay truthful me :D) Later he further emphasised that interviewers/employers do prefer those who are honest with them and don't promise more than they know of or are sure of, especially when they don't know what the potential organisation they may join requires.
Although Desmond majored in Chemistry, with his Minor in Economics (of which 3modules were finance related), he is getting a job as a personal banker. I think this further supports my consideration of taking a Minor in Econs myself.
Well there's really too much to say about our chat and I'm really tired (I slept at 3+ and got up at 7+ this morning). I just hope I'll soon find friends to attend lectures together with.
From left: Julia (NTU Engin) [This was like the first time I'm seeing her ever since we left primary school I think. I looked at her and literally took a couple of seconds before I could register that this young lady who appeared at our table - she was late - is the Julia from primary school!] Jiayi (NUS Media) Gloria (NUS Med) Boonshan (Duke, US Bio) me Chiew Siong (NTU Engin) Eugene (NTU Biz) Joon Ming (NTU Engin) Xuguang (NTU Biz) Jeremy (SMU Biz)
The above was taken at Coffee Club at The Central, Clarke Quay (by a service staff) and the bottom was taken outside (by a young Caucasian lady)

The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin – Few books have had as significant an impact on the way society views the natural world and the genesis of humankind.
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell – Gladwell looks at how a small idea, or product concept, can spread like a virus and spark global sociological changes. Specifically, he analyzes “the levels at which the momentum for change becomes unstoppable.”
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens – This is a tale that lingers on the topic of attaining and maintaining a disciplined heart as it relates to one’s emotional and moral life. Dickens states that we must learn to go against “the first mistaken impulse of the undisciplined heart.”
Lolita – This is the kind of book that blows your mind wide open to conflicting feelings of life, love and corruption… and at times makes you deeply question your own perceptions of each. The story is as devious as it is beautiful.
Getting Things Done by David Allen – The quintessential guide to organizing your life and getting things done. Nuff said.
How To Cook Everything by Mark Bittman – 900 pages of simple instructions on how to cook everything you could ever dream of eating. Pretty much the greatest cookbook ever written. Get through a few recipes each week, and you’ll be a master chef by the time you’re 30.
Honeymoon with My Brother by Franz Wisner – Franz Wisner had it all… a great job and a beautiful fiancée. Life was good. But then his fiancée dumped him days before their wedding, and his boss basically fired him. So he dragged his younger brother to Costa Rica for his already-scheduled honeymoon and they never turned back… around the world they went for two full years. This is a fun, heartfelt adventure story about life, relationships, and self discovery.
Self-note: Tip for my future business =D
give employees reasonably high pay to keep them- otherwise they are unlikely to stay loyal.
treat employees not according to how well they treat me but how conscientious they are at work

5Nov11: "Real Steel" w Hl (action packed but not too hardcore for me. i liked that there was the father and son element and how the father eventually softened his heart and especially the part when charlie was having trouble telling max sth and max was so understanding saying "Don't worry. Your secret's safe with me." touching and demonstrates true fighting spirit)
12Dec11: "50/50" w L (adopting her words - a heavy topic put across in a lighthearted way, but not taking away d meaning. most of it was rather hollywood-ish trashiness but there were a couple of punch lines "u can't change ur parents, but u can change d way u respond to them.")
25Dec11: "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" w KY (ultimate action packed! super tense almost throughout the movie, and interesting Tom Cruise made it such that not everything happened smoothly - he would jump and misland and get all sorts of injuries..it's really the courage to jump without hesitation even though you are not sure you'll be alive after that. KY loved d movie and said she would watch it again!)

22Mar12: "The Iron Lady" w KY (really love Thatcher's sharp words. inspiring and thought-provoking, tho i was still left uncertain of what to do with my life, the movie is definitely an encouraging one)
29Mar12: "Barney's Version" w SJ (a funny movie of a screwed up life of a man who had 3 wives, smoked and drank but very heartwarming at the same time, the relationships with the dad and the 3th wife - quotable quotes!)

4May12" "Avengers" w MF n PS (funny, action-packed)
