wow. this marks my 700th blog post here. seeing that the previous total before i just clicked "new post" reads 699.
okay on to the topic of this post.
No one can take away my time.
I decide how I want my time to be spent and Him alone is the only one I should allow to take my time. No human. If I were to spend my time on anyone, it should be out of my choice.
Which reminds me of the notebook I bought at TCC almost a year back. I had uploaded a photo of it here I remember. On the cover it reads:
life's lessons - independence, bgr; doing business
today i went with my mom, dad, grandma, 4th and 6th uncles and families for lunch and to Shuanglin temple again (as in like last year), and i had a good lesson from my 4th aunt-in-law about independence. she was emphasizing the importance of independence, and one thing that was a rather new idea was about independence even at home. she said you can be independent at home too, like putting your own clothes to wash and ironing them yourself etc. i was very impressed by how she could verbalise her ideas of life's lessons so well. like that having well-defined rationales for how she leads her life, and how she brings up her kids.
and to lead a life without regrets by trying everything you want to try. so that you won't die with the regret that you haven't tried something you really wanted to. and to not think so much. to just do. to take up opportunities. in between i was amazed she was like giving a speech on life's lessons to one person. me. and considering she's not any inspirational speaker or whomever who has made any speeches in her life (i think), i consider it a stunning speech, just formed up on the spot, and developed by picking from memory.
at one point i asked if she ever consulted people when she had problems, she said she's the type that makes a big hooha over every day occurrences but when there are real serious issues, she would go quiet and close up at home, mull over it alone maybe for a week and eventually come up with a solution herself. she won't ever tell anyone else serious issues. now she only shows her kids her sad and not so nice side. so that they'll appreciate what she has done for them.
you are responsible for any decision you make and she says like if her daughter gets a boyfriend, she won't try to stop her or anything (unlike her mom who was so angry about her getting married to my uncle that she said to not go back to indo anymore). she would tell her daughter the pros and cons of the boy, and let her make the decision herself. haha i suddenly realise this is exactly what dr L told me for my fyp...lol
in a relationship, sometimes you have to give more, sometimes the other party has to give more. in her words, 以前是我欠他的,现在到他欠我了。in the past, it was like i owed him; now, his turn to be owing me. cos when they got married, she gave up her ideals of being a career woman, and focussed on assisting him in his business that was just starting and on bringing up their children, in the process giving up friends. and it's been 16years. now she feels like her independent streak has built up again. and so my uncle has to be doing more to keep her. giving up friends wasn't a too drastic issue for her tho, since she has the capability of making friends easily just chatting. (which was well-proven in how she could give me that impromptu speech that lasted quite long.)
she had actually decided not to get into any relationships after some ordeals of a quick divorce due to her dad's health complications (which i didn't really understand but didn't ask either), before suddenly my uncle came along and her life changed. and so she thinks there's no use having grand plans. when things happen, you take them as they come.
oh something else she and my uncle mentioned at the temple before the above transpired on the van. when you've found the right one, 你要逃也逃不掉的. you can't escape even if you want. the second guy was a real good guy and they had already registered their marriage (such that she could come to singapore) and were almost getting a flat. he took good care of her and her dad. but things didn't work out. so she said, don't stay with a good man just because he's a good man; a good man may not be the one for you.
and it was only after a few years that she got to know my uncle. and in both their words, you'll know it when you find the right one. and when you don't have one yet, don't worry about it. in today's world, it's not necessary to get married. what's more important is to be independent.
she was very firm on her belief that a guy who truly loves you won't do anything that hurts you.
she was pretty good at judging people. said my mom appears very independent but actually is quite dependent. and i said oh i'm like that too. haha. quite interesting since just yesterday i was talking to a friend about this.
and she kept emphasizing 命运. fate. i don't really have an opinion on this (i mean i accept and agree with most of what she said, but this, i'm ambivalent).
also had a good lesson on managing a business when we were at the temple. though some ideas may kind of go against my personal principles (and that's why i subsequently decided my nature is not suited for the business world). ideas like marking up the price (compared to fixed price at like department stores) at random stalls so that you can give discounts to please the customer to buy it. in the business world that's called flexibility. and like putting signages, which they said some bosses have no idea to apply it and even when told are just too lazy to do it but they've tried it and seen the drastic increase in revenue from like a few hundred dollars to $1.6k.
about the point of taking up opportunities, at a young age, yes we should try many things. but, we can't give up after too short a period, like just one day. she gave the example of one friend who gave up after just a day at a factory job and she didn't want to let the friend try starting up a business cos with that sort of attitude, you won't be able to succeed at a business. you need to have the tolerance to hold out for five years. there will be difficulties for sure but if you're the type that gives up easily, you'll meet with even more difficulties, added my uncle. i was trying to get my cousin who is in her final year at poly studying business to listen but she was too shy or something. then they started to talk about how she gave up with just a month left as a shoe promoter during a vacation some time back, and that she had given up too soon. when you do a business, you've to start from the bottom (just like anything else actually). if you don't know how your workers feel, how would you be a good boss?
my uncle was very firm on the idea of that when you're a subordinate, you've to behave like one. it's like in the army, if no one listens to the commander, how do you fight a war? your boss is always your boss. when you're a child, your parents are always your parents. no matter how wrong they are. (i've some issues with this :X)
oh i suddenly recalled something else my grandma told me that i think is worth applying (and which i've known before actually but it's just not my nature to do so). in the words of a thingsweforget.com note: be first to say hi.
and also, to just listen when people tell you not so nice things about other people, and not to tell the other people that people have talked about them. erm. actually i apply this rule quite well in view of that i generally am quite shut-up, but i've to admit i broke the rule for a close friend, and it was something i've done wrong.
today's the first time in weeks i got to sleep beyond 720am. after getting up 610 or 7 or so for 8am lect or lab every day since the start of the year. tho i actually woke up around 720. and made myself go back to sleep. okay i do like my body self-alarm clock.

Other Recommended Readings by Marc
The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin – Few books have had as significant an impact on the way society views the natural world and the genesis of humankind.
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell – Gladwell looks at how a small idea, or product concept, can spread like a virus and spark global sociological changes. Specifically, he analyzes “the levels at which the momentum for change becomes unstoppable.”
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens – This is a tale that lingers on the topic of attaining and maintaining a disciplined heart as it relates to one’s emotional and moral life. Dickens states that we must learn to go against “the first mistaken impulse of the undisciplined heart.”
Lolita – This is the kind of book that blows your mind wide open to conflicting feelings of life, love and corruption… and at times makes you deeply question your own perceptions of each. The story is as devious as it is beautiful.
Getting Things Done by David Allen – The quintessential guide to organizing your life and getting things done. Nuff said.
How To Cook Everything by Mark Bittman – 900 pages of simple instructions on how to cook everything you could ever dream of eating. Pretty much the greatest cookbook ever written. Get through a few recipes each week, and you’ll be a master chef by the time you’re 30.
Honeymoon with My Brother by Franz Wisner – Franz Wisner had it all… a great job and a beautiful fiancée. Life was good. But then his fiancée dumped him days before their wedding, and his boss basically fired him. So he dragged his younger brother to Costa Rica for his already-scheduled honeymoon and they never turned back… around the world they went for two full years. This is a fun, heartfelt adventure story about life, relationships, and self discovery.
Self-note: Tip for my future business =D
give employees reasonably high pay to keep them- otherwise they are unlikely to stay loyal.
treat employees not according to how well they treat me but how conscientious they are at work

5Nov11: "Real Steel" w Hl (action packed but not too hardcore for me. i liked that there was the father and son element and how the father eventually softened his heart and especially the part when charlie was having trouble telling max sth and max was so understanding saying "Don't worry. Your secret's safe with me." touching and demonstrates true fighting spirit)
12Dec11: "50/50" w L (adopting her words - a heavy topic put across in a lighthearted way, but not taking away d meaning. most of it was rather hollywood-ish trashiness but there were a couple of punch lines "u can't change ur parents, but u can change d way u respond to them.")
25Dec11: "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" w KY (ultimate action packed! super tense almost throughout the movie, and interesting Tom Cruise made it such that not everything happened smoothly - he would jump and misland and get all sorts of injuries..it's really the courage to jump without hesitation even though you are not sure you'll be alive after that. KY loved d movie and said she would watch it again!)

22Mar12: "The Iron Lady" w KY (really love Thatcher's sharp words. inspiring and thought-provoking, tho i was still left uncertain of what to do with my life, the movie is definitely an encouraging one)
29Mar12: "Barney's Version" w SJ (a funny movie of a screwed up life of a man who had 3 wives, smoked and drank but very heartwarming at the same time, the relationships with the dad and the 3th wife - quotable quotes!)
